Welcome to University of Birmingham Student Switch Off

Student Switch Off is your chance to win prizes for yourself and a party for your hall, all for doing easy things to save energy.

Party for my hall?

Yep! All the halls at Birmingham are competing to save energy and at the end of the year the hall that’s saved the most gets a party! To help your hall come top make sure you follow our four energy saving tips.

How do I win Ben and Jerry’s?

We’ve got loads of great prizes to give out in our photo competitions, like Ben and Jerry’s (big tubs!), Propaganda tickets and NUS Extra cards. These run once a fortnight and usually involve just uploading a picture of yourself saving energy onto the Facebook page. Simple! There are lots of other competitions as well get on the email list and “Like” the Facebook page so you don’t miss out.

Results last year…

We added up the energy saving for 2011/12 and Maple Bank and Elgar Court won the competition! As their prize they received ice cream for every flat from the Ben and Jerry’s bus. But all the halls did really well and overall electricity use in halls was reduced by 6.9% which is enough to

  • Keep 102 tonnes of CO2 out of the atmosphere
  • Keep a 15W energy-saving lightbulb on for 1,450 years!
  • Boil 5.9 million cups of tea!
