Student Switch Off NUS Ben & Jerry's Carbon Leapfrog Degrees Cooler NUS Extra Image Map

Welcome to the University of Surrey Student Switch Off

Student Switch Off is your chance to win prizes for yourself and a Ben & Jerry’s party for your courtyard or block, all for doing easy things to help the environment!

Ben & Jerry’s for my court/block/flat?

Yep! All the courts on the Stag Hill campus, blocks on the Manor Park campus and flats on the Hazel Farm campus are competing to save energy and recycle the most. At the end of the year the court/block/flat on each campus that have been the greenest will receive a big delivery of Ben & Jerry’s! To help your court/block/flat come top make sure you follow our four energy saving tips.

How do I win Ben and Jerry’s?

As well as the communal prize, we’ve got loads of great prizes to give out at the individual level in our photo competitions, like more Ben & Jerry’s (big tubs!), Lush Cosmetics and NUS Extra cards. These run once every 2-3 weeks and usually involve uploading a picture of yourself saving energy onto the Facebook page. It really is as simple as that!! There are lots of other competitions as well so make get on the email list and “Like” the Facebook page so you don’t miss out.

2015/16 results

The latest stats from the 2015/16 campaign are available here. Over the first term energy usage reduced by 6% compared to the baseline which helped to keep over 37 tonnes of CO2 out of the atmosphere – great work everyone!

2014/15 results

The energy data for the 2014/15 academic year showed that usage across halls reduced by 10% compared to the baseline year! International House and Surrey Court were joint winners on the Stag Hill campus while Block D (including RR01-32, AF21-23, JB47-54, JB63-70) won the Manor Park campaign. Students in the winning courts on the Stag Hill campus were rewarded with a giveaway of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream while Block D of Manor Park received a Ben & Jerry’s giveaway coupled with an eco-quiz! On the Hazel Farm campus the top three flats were 21 Hamilton Drive, 1 Hamilton Place and 1 Hamilton Drive – residents of those flats received Ben & Jerry’s! Check out how your hall/block got on here. The energy saved over the year was enough to:

    • Keep 89 tonnes of CO2 out of the atmosphere
    • Keep a 15W energy-saving lightbulb on for 1,265 years!
    • Boil 5.1million cups of tea!
