Student Switch Off Assistant Job Description




Student Switch Off is a collaborative project between the university, SUSU and NUS to encourage students to save energy and money in their houses.


We provide households with advice on saving energy and collect three meter readings from them over the year. We reward the 5 households that use the least amount of energy per resident with Ben & Jerry’s ice cream.


We aim to engage with 50 households in the 2014/15 academic year and are looking for two University of Southampton students to assist the Project Manager in delivering various aspects of the campaign.


Responsibilities of the Student Switch Off Assistant


Work with the Student Switch Off Project Manager (Jesse Scharf) to engage 50 households in the area to the East of the Highfield Campus (Granby, Sidar, Ripstone, Broadlands, Mayfield, Ripstone and Kitchner Roads). This will involve visiting houses in the area on three occasions over the year. Full training will be provided.

The dates are as follows…


2nd October

Under the supervision of the SSO Project Manager visit participating households and recruit new house holds – 4 hours work @7.65 p/hr


Week of December 1st 2014

SSO Assistants to work together to visit participating households and collect electricity meter readings – 4 hours work @7.65 p/hr


Week of March 23rd 2015

SSO Assistants to work together to visit participating households and collect electricity meter readings V – 4 hours work @7.65 p/hr


Skills and Experience Required


–      Excellent verbal communication skills

–      Confident approach to engaging with new people

–      Interest in environmental issues

–      Reliable


This role would suit someone who is looking for a part time role that would add to their CV. Student Switch Off Assistants will receive a full employment reference from the National Union of Students on completion of the role.
