SSO shortlisted in Climate Week Awards

On Monday we attended the Climate Week awards in London as one of the four shortlisted finalists in the Best Campaign category. The category was won by the fantastic ‘Farming Futures‘ project run by Forum for the Future so massive congratulations to them, we’ll have to work harder to win next year ;-).

A fair amount of debate has surrounded Climate Week, particularly amongst the environmental movement, because of their choice of corporate sponsors (notably RBS and EDF). For our part, we believe that Climate Week is a great idea and a necessary event but that the choice of some of the sponsors was antagonistic to the aims of the week – providing external legitimacy to companies who are some of the poorest environmental performers in their fields. Obviously we’re not privy to the harsh realities of securing funding for such an event but we echo the view of the UKYCC that RBS, for example, should divest from the practice of investing in tar sands. We hope, however idealistically, that the sponsors of the event will draw on the inspiration of the shortlisted projects and fulfill their corporate responsibility to minimise their impact on climate change both directly and indirectly through their supply chains and investments.
