What a year!

June pic 1Here at NUS HQ we’re wrapping things up for 2014-15 and that could only mean one thing: rewarding all the best energy-saving and recycling halls across the country! So we’ve been travelling up and down the UK attending some fantastic events to say a big ‘well done’ to everyone in the winning halls.

The good people at Ben & Jerry’s donated hundreds of tubs of ice cream for these events and we’ve also given out vegetarian curry at Aston, picnic bags at Cardiff, SU hoodies at Northampton and a BBQ at Queen Mary’s! Southampton played giant party games in the sunshine while munching on ice cream and at the University of York the top 3 best halls received money to put towards their end-of-year event.

June pic 5At these events we collected signatures for an Avaaz climate change petition calling for action to stop the world from warming beyond two degrees – the limit we need to stay under to avoid the catastrophic effects of climate change. The petition calls on world leaders to commit to a transition to 100% clean energy by 2050 and will be presented at the UN Climate Change Conference happening in December in Paris. If you weren’t at one of our events you can sign the petition here to help support the campaign!

On top of all the Ben & Jerry’s, picnics and games we’ve also had a fantastic act of generosity from the winning halls at the University of Strathclyde. The two halls that saved the most energy, Forbes Hall and Murray Hall, were given some prize money and when asked what they would like to spend it on opted to give the money to two fantastic charities. Forbes Hall donated £667 to Aid to Nepal and Murray Hall donated £333 to Antony Nolan leukaemia and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Across the UK this year, students living in halls involved in the Student Switch Off have helped to reduce electricity usage by an average of 5.2% and keep 1,300 tonnes of CO2 out of the atmosphere. It just shows what an impact small changes can make when enough people do them.

Congratulations to all our winners and everyone who took part this year! We hope you all have a great summer and keep switching off!
